The Best Natural Skin Care Tips for Winter
The best natural skin care tips…
for those of us just trying to survive the winter.
It was -23C the other day here in Toronto.
Temperatures like this mean two things:
we are in the official doldrums of winter
my skin looks increasingly like a vintage snakeskin purse.
I envy all those “get outside” winter lovers. The ones who say “you just have to dress for it” and other such nonsense. For me, winter is something to endure and I try to accomplish this with as much daily pleasure possible.
While leaving for Spain would clearly be my first choice for dealing with the dark, cold days of winter in Canada, at the moment the more realistic answer is to deal with my alligator skin and fall in love with natural skin care. Based on conversation with leaders in sustainable beauty, I’ve pulled together five absolutely essential tips for dealing with winter skin while injecting a needed pleasure boost to your daily life.
1. Oil cleansing is your friend.
If you follow me in the Instaworld you know that I am a recent convert to oil cleansing. It all started when I met Sonja Flay, founder of Double Happiness. She explained to the benefits of using a gentle oil as a facial cleanser. “Your skin’s microbiome is naturally acidic, which allows beneficial bacteria to flourish on your skin, keeping your first line of defense healthy and glowing. Using harsh cleansers kills off this flora and changing your ph balance to basic, causing dryness and flaking. An oil cleanser, on the other hand, keeps your ph balance healthy, allows the flora to flourish and doesn’t dry or strip your skin.” I didn’t believe her until I tried it and had magical results. Now I’m an oil cleansing evangelist.
2. Make a standing date for facials.
Do you think of facials and spa dates as once-in-awhile treats to delight in with your best girlfriends? Toss that ridiculous notion in the garbage immediately! This is winter and you need all the skin support you can get. There’s nothing like a regular facial with an esthetician that knows you and your skin. Anya Matrasova from Anutka Esthetics (who is also my skin care goddess) says that “the regular exfoliating and deep moisturizing that a facial provides helps compensate for the severe drying effects of central heating and cold outdoor temperatures”. Say no more darling, you had me moisturizing.
3. Dry masks are essential.
Please stop buying those drug store wet masks. They are full of chemicals, they actually dry out your skin and they are single-use (ewww…garbage). Make the switch to dry masks and don’t look back. According to Angie Tran, from Bare Me Beauty, a high quality dry mask gently encourages natural active ingredients deep into your skin, has lasting effects for over 6 hours and can be used up to three times. Be mindful of choosing a mask with all-natural, 3rd party certified ingredients (check out Made Safe) and then moisturize away.
4. Spritz like your life depended on it.
If you don’t have a natural face mist sitting on your desk right now, you’re missing out on all the pleasurable benefits of essential oils. Jennifer Bonato of Cardea AuSet, shared with me the lovely effects, both on your skin and your mood, of using a face mist. This delightful little bottle offers a little skin refresher in the middle of the day. Perk up your skin, get a little glow and improve your mood with all of the benefits of essential oil fragrances. One week in and I was tossing a bottle of calm into my bag every time I left the house.
5. Maximize those 10 minutes post shower.
You’ve toweled off and can already feel the winter itchy skin creeping in. Forget the creams and reach for the natural body oils. Serena Rogers, founder of Curata Sustainable Luxury, encourages women to turn those 10 minutes after a shower into a self-love ritual and deeply nourish their whole body with a natural body oil blend. Trust me when I say this takes self-care to a whole new level. Your moisture starved skin will thank you with a beautiful glow.
